A Wonnarua Story

There’s a feeling here, a rare and deeply moving sense of time and place. The history of the rock, the stories it keeps and the land it sits upon has been the both the muse for the Kawal Rock namesake and the source of the unique culture it inspires.

Upon the first visit to Kawal Rock, local indigenous woman Tracey Skene described an unspoken “tug” towards the land itself. Seeing one of the magnificent resident wedgetail eagles circling the rock, she told us the stories from the land and that “Ka-wal” is traditional Wonnaruan for “wedgetail eagle”, a symbolic protector in their culture.

An immediate, beautiful and enduring relationship was formed. We have since been lucky enough to host a number of “Women’s Business” healing rituals and are collaborating with Tracy and other Wonnaruan women to use the land for bush tucker gardens, orchards and ceremonies alike.
